Louisa continues seeing her longtime boyfriend of 7 years, Patrick, though they eventually break up due to her relationship with Will.

Noticing how limited his life is now and that he has few ambitions, Louisa tries to motivate Will to change. Through their frequent talks, Louisa learns that Will has traveled extensively his favorite place is a café in Paris. Over the next few weeks, Will loosens up and Louisa begins taking him on outings and the two grow closer. However, she tells Treena, and together they devise ways that will help convince Will to abandon his death wish. Louisa conceals knowing about Will and Camilla's agreement. Camilla intends to prove that, in time, he will believe his life's worth living. Horrified by his attempt, Camilla promised to honor her son's wish, but only if he agreed to live six more months. Louisa notices Will's scarred wrists and later overhears his mother and father discussing how he attempted suicide shortly after Camilla refused his request to end his life through Dignitas, a Swiss-based assisted suicide organization. Under Louisa's care, Will gradually becomes more communicative and open-minded as they share experiences together. Things worsen after Will's ex-girlfriend, Alicia, and best friend Rupert reveal that they are getting married. Louisa and Will's relationship starts out rocky due to his bitterness and resentment over being disabled. Ī second sequel, Still Me, was published in January 2018. Again, I understand the appeal of a platonic, non-sexualized romance, but it cannot come at the expense of the dignity to either party of the relationship, and Will's portrayal deprives dignity to an entire class of disabled persons.Me Before You is a romance novel written by Jojo Moyes. This is exemplified by the fact that the film's most romantic scenes (and a few comic ones) are of Louisa acting as a caretaker, and that Louisa doesn't even bother to break up with her current monogamous boyfriend as she spends more and more time with Will.

His relationship with Louisa has no chance of sexual culmination (at least according to the logic of the film), so Louisa is free of the usual pressures placed upon women in relationships and therefore can pursue Will without being concerned that she will be expected to consummate their love. Me Before You takes the opposite tactic, by making Will so nonthreatening that he can't even be conceived of as a sexual being. Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey have popularized chastity fetishism by substituting sexual attraction with attraction to danger, which leads to problematic romanticism of physical and emotional abuse. What I find more distressing, though, is how the film blatantly uses Will's disability as a shorthand for chastity fetishism.
